Luang Prubang is one of the most touristy places in Laos. We caught the bus there. The bus trip was about 10 hours through the mountains. Thankfully it was uneventful. Apparently every so often hmaong guerillas still attack the buses. As a result the buses usually carry a guard. The picture above shows ours at his most vigilant.

You have to admire a nationality when they build a monument like this. Built in 1969 with cement donated by the USA for an airport runway (undoubtedly for military usage considering what was happening at the time in Laos). The local people however decided that a more beneficial use would be to build this temple. With a design based on that of the Parisian Arc de Triomphe, the temple is a major feature of the Vientianne skyline. Due to its unique history it has since been dubbed the 'Vertical Runway'.

...quindi.....

Ahhh the wad of cash. We went to the bank and withdrew the equivalent of hundred dollars. However, the largest currency note is only the equivalent of of a five dollar bill. On this particular occassion however it dispensed the money to us in the equivalent of one dollar bills.

How lovely to feel so rich.

We entered Laos not knowing very much about it... other than the fact that it takes twenty hours on a bus from Hanoi. Thankfully the bus was almost empty so we could stretch out of multiple seats.

The bus utself left at 10 o'clock at night (was meant to leave at 7.30) and drives through the night to arrive at the border at 6.30 the next morning. We were curious why everybody talked about having to get to customs early. It was only when we got there that we found out why.

Effectively about twenty buses all arrived at the same time. All off the people, mostly vietnamese, piled off the bus and then attempted to get to the front of the queue as noisily and efficiently as they knew how. That is, they started pushing like buggery. The whole process took about three hours of hussle and bussle, which Alessia especially excelled at. Undoubtedly, one of most treasured memories will be of Alessia not so patiently explaining at the top of her voice to whichever Vietnamese would listen why pushing wouldn't achieve anything.

Once back on the bus the rest of journey was fairly uneventful, even though our driver had not quite determined that his bus wasn't the Fomula 1 car he clearly thought it was. We arrived four hours early.

After all the kefuffle about getting a bed on the boat we ended up sleeping on the deck anyway. It really was quite beautiful waking up on the deck of the boat with the bay all around.

Jim, a scotsman we met on the road, also chose to sleep on the boat. He however chose to sleep under the sunbed as opposed to under it.

As all people do when in Vietname, we decided to go to Halong Bay. And as with all other tourists we booked ourselves on a 2 day one night boat tour. As you will see from the photos above, we were lucky enough to run into Guy and Vastla whom we had first met on the bus from Nha Trang to Hoi Ann and then subsequently met repeatedly as we travelled up the coast. The bay was wonderful although we had some 'fun' with tour guides.

Basically they decided to play their usual silly Vietnamese games whereby they sell you a tour which includes all transport plus a night on the boat and meals. Then when you arrive they want to charge you extra for transport and meals and there are not enough rooms on the boat for all the people so some have to go to the hotel on the island.

Unfortunately, our guide had an unfortunate way of communicating with tourists, having learnt his manners in a Vietnamese re-education camp (he was undoubtedly a guard). This obviously ingratiated him with said tourists such that when he ordered several members off the boat to sleep in the hotel, one Polish man decided to confirm his desire to stay on the boat by grabbing the guides shirt and making his point up close and personal.

Needless to say, the guard/ guide wasn't used to this sort of behavour (no doubt his former charges were more compliant). As such he took offence, stormed downstairs, only to return with a lead pipe and the conviction that braining tourists was good for business.

Thankfully a few of the more level headed people amongst us (not me as I was cheering them on from the sidelines) decided that fighting might spoil the mood and calmed things down. Our Polish friend eventually apologised for wanting what he paid for and left the boat. The rest of us continued the trip which was relatively uneventful...

None the less the episode will remain with us as one of the finer examples of Vietnamese hospitality and truly a wonderful demonstration of how to build good will among clients.
